Quaker Evolution

The aim is…..
To create a simplified, authentic vision of Quakerism that will be readily acceptable to today’s public as being coherent, interesting and worth exploring, and attract a new generation of Quakers for tomorrow
How?
By taking Quakerism back to the very first principles established by the early Quakers in the UK, and expressing them in modern language, dealing with todays issues while focussing on tomorrow’s opportunities.
Why?
The first step is to develop ideas of how that vision could be put together and invite comment and discussion of the ideas. This is currently being developed, and will be available soon
Above all, Quakers are about values. Quakerism developed in the 17th century, in an environment where Christianity was the dominant religion in Britain. Now, Quakers in the UK welcome those of all faiths and none. So, a spiritual but not religious approach is essential for inclusivity.
Peace
Quakers believe that peace is more than just the absence of war. It’s a way of life rooted in the understanding that there is ultimate goodness, wisdom and intelligence in everyone. This belief leads Quakers to renounce violence in all its forms, seeking peaceful solutions to conflicts. Their peace testimony is active, emphasizing reconciliation, forgiveness, and building a world where justice and equality prevail. For Quakers, true peace isn’t merely a goal; it’s a daily practice guided by the conviction that love and nonviolence can transform the world.
Stewardship
Quakers view the Earth as a sacred gift and themselves as its stewards, not its owners. This belief fosters a profound sense of responsibility to care for the natural world. Quakers strive to live simply, minimizing waste and consumption, recognizing the interconnectedness of all life. Their stewardship extends beyond individual action; Quakers also advocate for environmental policies that protect the planet. This commitment stems from the belief that future generations deserve to inherit a healthy Earth, and care for creation aligns with their values of peace, equality, and the sacredness of all life.
Truth
Quakers believe that Truth is a living experience, not a static set of beliefs. They seek this deeper Truth through silent waiting, seeking an inward connection to the divine. This inner light guides their actions and compels them to live with integrity. For Quakers, speaking the truth involves more than just honesty; it requires an unwavering commitment to living authentically and in accordance with their understanding of that inner Truth. They seek to align their words and deeds with this deeper reality, aiming to create a world built on honesty and respect.
Equality
Quakers hold a radical vision of equality, believing that all people are equal at the deepest level. This belief stems from the understanding that each person possesses an inner light, a spark of the divine. Therefore, Quakers reject social hierarchies, titles, and outward distinctions that create divisions. They were early champions of women’s rights, abolitionism, and social justice movements. For Quakers, equality isn’t merely a concept; it’s a call to action to dismantle systems of oppression and build a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
